MineMT Project Results: Strengthening the United Kingdom rare earth magnet supply chain

Jessie Briggs
Wrapped up in May 2025, The MineMT project set out to enhance the sustainability metrics of the rare earth element (REE) magnet supply chains, by integrating reliable and accurate sustainability assessments accessible.
Backed by Innovate UK and delivered through a collaboration between Minviro, the University of Exeter, and Mkango Resources, this 18-month collaborative R&D project, piloted a pioneering Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) framework using XYCLE, an advanced software platform for data-driven sustainability and compliance.
This project is an essential step for the sustainability of UK’s and Europe’s rare earth magnet supply chains
UK’s and Europe’s green energy transition and net-zero future relies on securing critical Rare Earth Elements (REEs) that are used to produce Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) for clean energy technologies including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and water pumps. With demand for these technologies soaring, the IEA have predicted a 700% increase in REE demand across the globe.
Geopolitical tensions and new sustainability performance expectations have exposed supply chain vulnerabilities, especially the heavy reliance on Chinese rare earth minerals. Manufacturers and end users now seek to see supply chain resilience, responsible sourcing, and ESG reporting criteria in their search for rare earth material supplies.
What we have achieved in this project
Over 18-months, this project delivered significant milestones to generate a best-in-class product and mine-to-magnet database for the industry to adopt.

One-of-a-kind software for the rare earths industry
In a first of its kind tailored for the rare earths industry players, MineMT integrates environmental (LCA), economic (LCC), social impact data (SLCA), Criticality and Circularity into a single assessment enabled by XYCLE, providing modelling of supply chain scenarios that highlight the most sustainable and commercially viable pathways. It goes beyond traditional life cycle assessment by incorporating predictive capabilities and previously overlooked social and economic datasets. MineMT’s predictive capabilities enable exploration and feasibility-stage companies to assess potential impacts of their production routes early on in their journeys.
XYCLE is a software as a service solution that lets procurement, sustainability and finance teams map their rare earth magnet value chains with instant sustainability metrics available.
Industry impact from the collaboration
Hundreds of members across the global LCA network attended project webinars, which included XYCLE demonstrations. A process simulation project agreement with the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology validated XYCLE’s link with process digital twins, opening for further opportunities. Early pilot users include magnet recyclers, Mkango Resources and two European electric motor manufacturers.
What value is this providing Minviro’s clients
With XYCLE being informed by MineMT results, exploration companies, manufacturers, original equipment makers and consultants gain insights into trade-offs and synergies in decarbonising supply chains. MineMT also supports UK’s industrial policy goals, leadership in sustainability performance, and reduced reliance on high-impact imports. It opens the door for companies to competitively differentiate themselves on robust multi-pillar sustainability metrics.
Exploring better quality REE data, more advanced methodologies, and bespoke industry software features, Minviro is expanding their abilities toward:
- Faster due diligence, quantifying environmental, cost and social risks integrated into decision making process
- Predictive sustainability metrics for junior mining companies.
- Accelerated compliance, automatic alignment with CSRD, SEC and ISO LCA reporting frameworks.
- Competitive advantage, prove kilograms of magnet strength per kilogram of carbon and social risk avoided, a message that resonates with the leading industries targeting net zero supply chains.
- In depth understanding of rare earth extraction flowsheet design, thermochemical limitations of critical metal circularity options and advanced rare earth research topics.
